At 11pm on the 22nd December, West Side Stories: The Making of a Classic will repeat on BBC4.
West Side Story is one of the best loved musicals of all time: songs like Maria, Somewhere, Tonight and America have become some of the biggest hits in show business. And yet West Side Story had an uneasy birth when it was created in 1950s by Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, Jerome Robbins and Arthus Larents. As the worl celebrates the 60th anniversary of West Side Story, dancer Bruno Tonioli and broadcaster Suzy Klein go in search of the true story behind the inception of this classic show, talking to those who were actually there. With the BBC Symphony Orchestra and singers cast specially we re-live some of the wonderful music, and discover how West Side Story placed racial tension and teenage gangs of the 1950s centre stage to create a hit that changed musical theatre forever.
